1776 Des Barres Muskeget Shoals Premium Gallery Wrap Canvas
Before the American Revolution, maritime charts of our coastline were incomplete and inaccurate. With the publication of J.F.W. Des Barres' Atlantic Neptune, mariners had accurate charts and notes for the first time.
Here, a topographical map of present-day Chappaquiddick Island is featured as part of the nautical chart depicting the Muskeget Shoals, which lies between the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. About the shoals, Des Barres instructs:
"To avoid these shoals keep Cape Poge bearing to the Southward of West until you approach the South Point of the Horse Shoe which is steep too. The bearings of Tuckanunck Island, as you draw near it will direct you. When Cape Poge Bears West and Tuckanunck Island South, you are in e/y Narros. And when you have Brought the Saddle of the Island to bear S.S.W. You may steer S.S.E. for Nantucket Harbor or may long Stretches either to the Northward or Southward, the Sound being clear of Shoals."
The original chart appears in the author's Atlantic Neptune. London : [J.F.W. Des Barres], 1777-[1781].
