Proudly display Vineyard Haven history with this detailed 19th Century map of the town created by George H. Walker & Co.

Subtitled "The Popular Seaside Summer Resort," the picture depicts the village of Vineyard Haven and its harbor from an overhead vantage point towards the west. Although the Vineyard was beginning to cater to Victorian summer visitors, much of the town's maritime heritage can still be seen as evidenced by two wharves (left), a sailor's free reading room, the Marine Hospital (now the MV Museum), and four ship captain's residences, two of which can be identified by the letters C and M in the center towards the bottom right.

In the background, the island's two other down-island villages Edgartown and Cottage City can be seen. The latter, now Oak Bluffs, originated during the 1830s as a summer retreat for Methodist revivalist camp meetings.
