1866 Copeland Oak Bluffs Village Plan Premium Gallery Wrap Canvas
Ever wonder why it's called Circuit Avenue? The Circuit was designed to encircle the Village of Oak Bluffs with a hairpin turn at Farm Pond to return to the main part of town. It's easy to see how Post Office Square was once a road connecting Ocean Park to Circuit Avenue, but here you can see Amoskeag Avenue clearly cutting across. One can only imagine the traffic jams if that road was still there!
This layout, dated October 25, 1866, was designed by landscape architect and town planner Robert Morris Copeland out of his Boston office. Much of the area depicted in this layout is now known as the Copeland District, a historic district preserved by the efforts of the Cottage City Historic District Commission. To find out more about the history of the area, visit the Oak Bluffs Public Library, which houses original town documents dating back to this time period.
Our digital restoration efforts removed tears and holes from the original layout, however the fold lines remain as a testament to how it was preserved for the last 150+ years. This canvas print holds a place of pride for us in our home, and we hope it will for you as well.
